There is a trend emerging in the T-Shirt industry. A resurgence of the “Made in the USA” movement and what TShirtman.com calls, “TShirts – Born in the USA”.
American Apparel was one of the 1st companies pioneering “Made in the USA” which ended up creating over 11,000 jobs and established retail stores around the world. Other US apparel companies who had fled America by opting for cheap labor in foreign lands, are returning home.
Now that all Americans have been affected by the US economic decline and for the 1st time in history social media has revealed human rights violations within foreign plants. Tshirts – “Born in the USA” are even more in demand. Here are some reasons this new movement is emerging:
1. Loss of US Jobs - Rebuild the US economy Bring back jobs lost to outsourcing within the garment industry. Incentives to foster creativity, entrepreneurship and business in America. 2. Fair Trade Call to action against foreign sweat shops, under pay, child labor and violation of human rights. 3. Environmental Concerns - Safety and Health Hazards US consumer demands for organic cotton, recycled, soy based inks, 100% eco products and plant regulations to control toxic air pollution. Imported apparel items have been recalled for harmful chemicals over the years. Real concerns about toxic levels have been voiced about lead, PVC and other dangerous substances. 6. Corporate Manufacturing quality overseas has declined. Moves towards NoCOE, costs to do business in particular freight costs have skyrocketed.
How much of an impact this T-Shirt movement will bring is still to be determined. Concerned citizens can still make a difference by buying US products.
